Deleted Scene #9

Chapter Four: The Core and Gap

Section: The Flow of Security, or How America Must Keep Globalization in Balance

Commentary: This ninth "deleted scene" was cut because it's neat but not necessary to the story. I include it here because it's a funny little example of how connectivity can trump old-school reputation in the era of globalization. Plus, I paraphrase a funny line from Mel Brooks' "History of the World, Part One."

Deleted Scene: How I Really Got Invited to India

[TEXT BEGINS]

I totally lucked out in being invited. The Indian commodore in charge of finding a U.S. Government speaker for the symposium that would kick-off the event was himself a graduate of the U.S. Naval War College, and so he really wanted a senior professor from that institution. The college did have a senior professor named Barnett (Roger Barnett), a significant name in the business, but thanks to my love of the Internet, the college's web server at that time featured more reports written by me than the rest of the faculty combined. I was actually the first regular professor at the college to be given the title and privileges of webmaster -- meaning I ran my own websites without oversight. Naturally, the Indian commodore did his initial reconnaissance of the college's faculty by checking out our website. So guess which Barnett got invited? In a connected world, it's good to be the webmaster.
