My recent "appearance" on CNN

Friend Dave Davison writes that he saw me on CNN Thursday night. He sent me email Friday congratulating me. I was a bit flabbergasted, since I was packing pictures and paintings Thursday night at home. Not having had any out-of-body experiences since my college days, I was intrigued, and replied by email to Dave, asking if I was good and what did I say?

He wrote back:

Tom: I can't remember the exact content, but you were shown in two separate segments wearing a blue suit coat and tie and accompanied by a shot of "your" map along with your explanation of the Core/Gap theme. If it was a rerun, they did a good job of splicing it in to make it appear to be a fresh comment on the terrorist situation.

Any coverage helps, I imagine.

Dave

Here's my best guess: Back when book came out in late April of last year, I stopped by CNN at one point to do an appearance on one show or another and CNN Pentagon chief Jim Barnett (no relation) asked me to tape a segment on the book. I answered questions fed by an associate producer for about 45 minutes. It may well have come from there.

Another possibility: last time I was on Blitzer I did it from Boston (my kids in the hall) and after the show (it was the Feb "Mr. President" piece"), I shot about 30 minutes of Q&A with Jim Barnett himself feeding the questions in my ear. I was told to look off camera a bit as to suggest that I was talking to Jamie MacIntyre, their Pentagon correspondent. Since that was a lot more recent, that could have been the source as well. Impossible for me to know which, in the end, without seeing the tape myself.

Third possibility: I taped about an hour with Tim Foreman of CNN (used to be with ABC) for series on future of war that was broadcast on Paula Zahn's show. Could have lifted from that as well.

I guess it shows that it pays to do these things, especially the ones on the side that the network simply banks for the mean time and breaks out weeks or months later for use.

And it may have explained why suddenly PNM rose in Amazon's rankings Friday, jumping from about 6k to 1.5k for a while.
