Dateline: in the Shire, Indy, 26 October 2005
A day lost largely to the house (all morning finalizing electric and AV and cable and phone and computer and home theater and intercom and security system, and then most of evening locking in on cabinet changes, final choices on appliances and picking out a gas grill for the deck). All in all, a solid 100 decisions to be made: bang, bang, bang and so on.
All very enjoyable and it's great fun to see ideas becoming so real, right before your eyes.
But exhausting as well.
Actually, the really exhausting part today was appearing in Second Life. Got signed in at 1pm CST and didn't get off until almost 4pm. Half-hour getting set-up and getting to the UN-like forum where I spoke before a 100-plus, I was told.
I "spoke" via typing for about 60 minutes, and then typed questions for about 70 more. By the time I was done because my kids all bust into the apartment and began pummeling me with questions and requests, I was typed out--completely.
I have never typed so much so fast. My hands still hurt and my fingers are still a bit shakey.
It seemed to go well, but I'll leave that judgment to others. Questions were pretty good, but I was clearly an unknown to almost all, and given the left-of-center proclivities of the crowd (described to me by my host), it seemed a hard sell. You got those who-are-we-to-impose-our-. . . vibes.
Still, I definitely enjoyed it, even the weird sound of clapping at the end that came over my speakers!
Nothing to blog, as I am all "talked" out.
NPR Morning Edition apparently ran my segment this morning. I got some emails that said the editing made me sound too harsh and that Inskeep was messing with me, while others didn't seem to pick that up at all, instead just being reminded that I had a new book out (good thing to remind people of), so hard for me to say. I'll give it a listen tomorrow when I'm not so bushed.
I'll also try to comment on that weird, snarky Philadelphia Inquirer story that quoted my blog recently.
