I've just about had it...

... with all the spam. We have had about 2252 junk comments in the last two weeks.

I spend too much time sifting hundreds of comments for the few odd real comments.

Movable Type has a feature where every comment gets an automated spam score. I'm ratcheting the threshold up starting now. And I'm not looking for false positives.

The best way to make sure your comment gets published is still, two years later, to register with and then comment through TypeKey. Would you consider doing that, especially if you're a frequent commenter?

Next step, if this doesn't help, ratchet the threshold up more.

And after that, I've got no recourse left but going to only TypeKey commenters.

Sean,

I've had a lot of success using both the CCode and TCode plugins from alogblog:

http://alogblog.com/movabletype/plugins/ccode_and_tcode_for_mt_33_version/

(That's for MT 3.3x versions; more documentation is on the MT 3.2x pages for the earlier version, and might be helpful reading.)

Since installing these, I've have only a few comment spams -- after more than a year of use! (Trackback spams are also cut down, with TCode, but not by as much.)

I'm also using the native MT plugin for tweaking not only the spam scoring, but also for winnowing out comments and trackbacks which have the most common spam keywords, or sending them to 'junk status'. Still, this seems to affect the trackback spam more than comment spam, because CCode does a great job of eliminating comment spam before the MT system gets it.

BTW, for some reason, no matter how often I sign in to my Typekey account when deciding to leave a comment here, after hitting 'post', the Typekey information disappears and my comments are sent into moderation status. For instance, I signed in with the last comment; then, seeing the result, I decided to leave this comment and found that, mysteriously, I was still not signed in to Typekey. I've not had this problem with other MT blogs...

Signed up for TypeKey. FKA Dan in B-more, hon.

I don't think it would hurt to require TypeKey to comment.

Sean,
We've been wrestling with "The Spam Problem" at work. Catchpas, though they may be onerous, are very, very effective at preventing comment spam. I'd imagine Movable Type has a catcpha module? Let me know if you need help implementing or testing it.

I'd recommend going to TypeKey only comments. I provide comments hereon infrequently, but taking 15 seconds to login to TypeKey is no big deal.
