ARTICLE: 'Iran Curtails Freedom In Throwback to 1979: Repression Seen as Cultural Revolution,' By Robin Wright, Washington Post, June 16, 2007; Page A10
Good signs, in my mind, on Iran internally. The mullahs are really scared at growing social discontent. The economy's only going to get worse.
What we need to do is the Gorby trick: we need to deny them the external enemy rationale if we want the soft kill to eventually unfold from within.

Dr barnett, you know after neocon's plan; which was for the Israel
to attack lebanon which was badly defeated. it was a precondition to attack syria & iran. after that defeat by cheny&neocons, we see
rumsfeld & bolton fired, and the recomendations of baker & hamilton
is impelamented.and Rice and her group get the upper hand in the
admin. iran &u.s talk in egypt, then in iraq, and now maybe in 3 weeks again.they agree on supporting malaki Gov. plus other agree-
-ments.now we see the necons are regrouping, cheny & the israel
lobby(joseph lieberman) have new plan to attack iran before bush
is out of office. olmert is in us and trying to do just that. the precond-
-tion in order to attack iran are as follow:
1) plastine issue; we see they trying to divide them in to Gov. and
then attack gaza, also internal israel Gov's shuffling. this is already
failing.
2) lebanon; creating artificial group in the north & trying to cause a
civil war again. this is also failing.
3) Iraq; we see the failing of the surge by cheny & abraham very
badly. also the uniting of sadar(shia) and the sonnys against the
ocupation forces. and weaking of the malaki Gov. this also failing.
4) afganistan; we see the afgan people and not the taleban in the
south are fighting in kabol & else where with nato . leaving the pakistan issue (which is going to be the biggest problem) alone & the
effect of the colaps of the palastinian unity Gov on the arab's Govs
like saudi, eygpt, all gulf countries. for these resons i think the attack
possiblities on iran is not great. what i hope that at least the new
adims. would open up to iran economicly(maybe like korea,japan,....)
and like you said stop following the ally's "best interst", and see iran
as a good ally in future.by sanctions all you do make the Gov in iran
oppress the democratic wishes of the people.

The problem with trying the Gorby "soft kill" trick on Iran is that we've already done it once, and the world has seen how disasterous it was for the Russian people. The Iranian government has had their eyes open for the last 20 years, and have seen that if Russia's experience of that the "soft kill" you talk about is any example it would mean poverty and death for millions of Iranians.
