So I took the weekend off!

I average 4 posts a day , 365 days a year, yielding just over 5200 posts over the past 42 months.

But as any reader can attest, I work in bursts--sort of a manic-depressive blogger.

I took the weekend off thanks to my wife's decision to sneak off to Seattle to see Mel Brooks' musical "Young Frankenstein" during its pre-Broadway tryouts. She says it's fantastic, with solid vet Sutton Foster in Teri Garr's role, Megan Mullaly ("Will and Grace") in Madeline Kahn's role, Andrea Martin in Cloris Leachman's role, and fantastic Roger Bart (he played assistant to the director in the film version of "The Producers") in the Gene Wilder role. Bit long was Vonne's only complaint. It is sure to be a smash.

Anyway, I take the kids and drive to Chicago's "Wizard Con 2007," where my older ones parade around in "Matrix" costumes, posing for endless pictures and spending my money like its water. After a short visit with relatives there, we head to my childhood home of Boscobel, where my Mom is feted by local citizens before leaving for good for the Twin Cities to live with a sibling of mine. That was a lot of fun, sort of a "living" Irish wake.

While in Boscobel I ran in the hills with my older son Kev, reliving my youth. We also swam in the town pool, with my younger son Jerry running off the high-dive (about three times his height) a good couple dozen times. I myself got up to about 20 times before it began hurting (water is surprisingly hard, even at a mere 15 feet). I also managed to play nine holes with one of my brothers at the local golf course my Dad frequented for decades, using his old clubs (thought I'd bring them back to see the place, but they didn't seem amused, judging by my score). We drove back all last evening.

I spent all day today writing my column for next weekend (it's on SWFs).

Got a pile of papers sitting in my office, though. Hope to mow through them tonight and post some tomorrow.

Oh, and thanks for all the advice on the "dream date" (the most intriguing was "the Chinese version of you," suggested by more than one reader). Looks like this thing will happen in October. Not sure who we'll seek to enlist, as I'm not in charge of the event. More to come.
