Grew up in a border state, where we used to watch Hockey Night in Canada and listen to CBC radio (and cross the border to drink beer legallly at 18). Used to hear an alt-rock band from Vancouver named 54-40 - as in 54'40" north. That's how far we originally claimed Oregon Territory, essentially to the edge of Russia (Alaska).
Border was, back then anyway, only a little more substantial than crossing into a neighboring state. Real culture shock was when I went to grad school in a foreign country (Alabama).
