Bridges are good

ARICLE: Proposed Yemen-Djibouti Bridge Threatens AFRICOM Security, By Chris Heffelfinger, Olivier Guitta, Terrorism Monitor, Volume 5, Issue 19, October 11, 2007

Decent article save for the hyping of the "security threat" to AFRICOM.

Economic development is obviously accelerated by any bridge, while the added threat of improved access by al-Qaeda is laughably negligible.

In short, it ain't exactly a hard or long stealthy boat ride to make now, so how does a road with an obvious chokepoint for screening make the situation worse.

Other than that serious weak-ass analysis, the straight reporting in the piece is decent.

Big thing, of course, is the concept of the bridge.

That's an understatement. I don't know what the sea floor looks like between Yemen and Djibouti, but the gap is wider than the Gibraltar Straight. The economic analysis leading someone to think it'd be a good investment would make interesting reading by itself!
