Old dialogue at Leavenworth

ARTICLE: At an Army School for Officers, Blunt Talk About Iraq, By ELISABETH BUMILLER, New York Times, October 14, 2007

Good story, even if the "newness" of this dialogue is oversold (i.e., it started years before "this NYT reporter" showed up!). I mean, Petraeus and I led such a lunchtime discussion with the "Jedi Knights" at Leavenworth back in December 04. Petraeus was big on encouraging such debate.

My short answer remains: Rumsfeld and Shinseki were both right. The system simply ignored the war-peace distinction and conflated the argument incorrectly.

Why? We hate to think about postwars. Legacy of the Powell Doctrine.

(Thanks: Bill Millan)
