Canada 2020 Speakers’ Series: Dr. Thomas Barnett

Our 2nd Canada 2020 Speakers’ Series event of the season features international security expert Dr. Thomas Barnett, author of The Pentagon’s New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-First Century.

Where: Westin Hotel, 11 Colonel By Drive, Ottawa, ON
When: Thursday 29 November 2007 at 5:30 PM
Who: Dr. Thomas Barnet

In his book, Barnett draws on a combination of economic, political and cultural factors to predict and explain the nature of modern warfare. He presents concrete, world-changing strategies for transforming the US military — adrift in the aftermath of the Cold War and 9/11 — into a two-tiered power capable not only of winning battles, but of promoting and preserving international peace. Read Barnett’s latest musings on his blog.

Barnett has been a senior adviser to military and civilian leaders in a range of offices, including the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the Joint Staff, Central Command and Special Operations Command. During the tumultuous period from November 2001 to June 2003, he advised the Pentagon on transforming military capabilities to meet future threats.

We have asked Dr. Barnett to discuss what his vision means for the transformation of Canada’s Armed Forces and how we create an approach to conflict that better integrates defence, diplomacy and development.

The public presentation is a “free of charge”, first-come, first-serve basis with a limit of 150 people. There will be a pre-presentation reception (cash bar) at 5:30PM and Dr. Barnett’s presentation starts at 6:00PM sharp. A Question and Answer session will follow Dr. Barnett’s discussion.

I sent out the APB for all to register to see Dr Barnett. Very eagerly anticipating hearing him speak.

thanks, Floyd!

Cross-posted to Small Wars Council - hoping some of our Canadian members can make it.

thanks, Dave!

Dr Barnett

By all accounts anyone with a brain loved your talk to the government military crowd at 1500 29 Nov in Ottawa.

You may have lost them a bit with just the talk - I was scrambling to catch up as I've seen the brief about 10 x on the web. Just tell them up front its the brief plus much material via firehose from the Esquire Site.

You may not know it but you are 20% of one of the Canadian Royal Military College Courses for the MA in War Studies.

I'll button hole you next time for a picture.

VERY best regards
