It is the death of American Sinologists to have this sort of stuff so available on the web, just like it was earlier for us Sovietologists. Pretty soon, you're like an expert on France--nice . . . not thrilling . . . but nice.

Ouch... 7 or 8 years ago I could have taken a serious crack at it.

Why are articles like this (which I can't read) the death of US Sinologists? As a wanna-be Sinologist (off to get my MA next year), should I be considering an alternate career?
