ARTICLE: India pleads: adopt our orphan girls, By Dean Nelson, Sunday Times , April 8, 2007
Tom was surprised he hadn't seen this news sooner (see the date above). He writes:
Michael Griffin is right to say that it seems India is following China's lead on this, oddly enough, just as China is throttling back somewhat. But it's more than that. This springtime decision was a huge reversal of India's long-held policy of none-too-subtly encouraging NRIs, or non-resident Indians, to adopt Indian kids. If you weren't NRIs, the obstacles, by many people's definition, made India too tough a place from which to adopt.
Vonne and I have pseudo-adopted Indian girls for years through a Catholic agency that funnels our donations directly to the young girl for her education. Because of my trip to India in 2001, we had thought seriously of adopting from India, but later, as we found out how improbable that seemed and my sister decided to adopt, we went in that direction, to our great delight. Now, we're in the process of trying to adopt again, this time from Taiwan, one of the smallest sources for international adoption today. We've still ruled out of India in this new rule set because our combined ages are over 90.
Nonetheless, this move, depending how it plays out, could vaunt India to the top ranks of countries putting up kids for international/transnational adoptions.
Hmmm, this happens five years earlier and who knows how our family might have turned out differently?
