Israel’s future isn’t South Africa, its denouement is South Africa

ARTICLE: “Olmert: Israel risks South Africa-like struggle,” by Josef Federman, USA Today, 30 November 2007, p. 13A.

A very frank admission from Olmert: stating “that ‘the state of Israel is finished’ if a Palestinian state is not created. He said the alternative is a South African-style apartheid struggle.”

Of course, he’s talking demographics.

My point is that he—and others—really fear the outcome less than the struggle.

It reminds me of two kids who have been caught fighting in the school playground. Brought to the principles office, they are lectured and forced to shake hands. That handshake will last until they meet again without any teachers around. Frankly, I am weary of hearing about that conflict.

"The day will come when the two-state solution collapses, and we face a South African-style struggle for equal voting rights," Olmert told Haaretz. "As soon as that happens, the state of Israel is finished."

Depending on how one interprets that statement, the two-state solution may be the first step towards a one-state solution-- IF the Israelis and Palestinians take advantage of the peace to let themselves grow together.
