OP-ED: Food vs. Fuel, By Robert J. Samuelson, Washington Post, Wednesday, December 12, 2007; Page A29
Nice piece by Samuelson that echoes the logic of my recent dairy column: Rising incomes equals more and better food consumption equals price pressures equals export opportunities equals the illogic of trying to get off oil with bio--especially with global warming altering ag production geography.

Isn't pricier food a good thing [tdaxp link]?
The problem in the poorest countries seems to be like of infrastructure, and where infrastructure is available food aid can do the trick.
Shrinking the Gap works from the outside in, both geographically and economically. It's important to begin adding the countries on the frontier of the Gap to the Seam, and Seam States to the New Core, and the way to do that is to give them a market for products that require large-scale investment (such as agriculture) -- as hand-outs, markets for products that require narrowcasted infrastructure (such as oil), etc.
