Warfare now is both asymmetrical and asynchronous

POST: Are We Ready for Hybrid Wars?, SMALL WARS JOURNAL, February 2, 2008

Good work by Frank Hoffman, whom I've known and respected for years.

My basic take: warfare (I would eschew the term "war") now is both asymmetrical and asynchronous. To me, that development only fuels the global shift from issues of defense (traditional wars) to security (this hybrid warfare).

I must admit that when I saw the headline, I thought to myself: Wars over hybrid cars! You gotta be kidding!"

This is the money quote for me:

"...we are entering a time when multiple types of warfare will be used simultaneously by flexible and sophisticated adversaries. These adversaries understand that successful conflict takes on a variety of forms that are designed to fit one’s goals at that particular time..."

Sucess in the world today is largely a matter of position (or rather relative position) and the organization (state, network, corporation ect.) that is able to regulate its position with a strategic vision will be the sucessful organization. To do that organizations will need to employ a full spectrum of abilities across social, economic, political and military domains in order to exert influence and power appropriate to each unique situation.
