We need a definition of grand strategy

ARTICLE: Air Force keeps eye on Russia, China, By Peter Spiegel, Los Angeles Times, February 8, 2008

Mark Gibson's totally correct [the reader who sent in this story]: now fight's on and fight's in the open, where it should be.

Until this fight goes public, the discussion remains unrealistic. Can't deny the reality of our current ops, and hard to do battle with the "ascendant" arguments in the absence of better strategic understandings with those countries.

This is why I am typing so furiously on the book: we need a definition of grand strategy that reconciles these arguments, because--again--this fight's on.

I just read that white paper, and it doesn't mention China or Russia in that context, in fact it doesn't mention Russia at all, and China only once, and only to discuss its ASAT test to note the USAF role in space.

The Air Force is asking people to read the tea leaves, and the LATimes does it for the reader. Just like the Navy, both fail to identify by name its challengers in their own strategic documents during a time of war. Sad.

This hurts to say, since I run a Navy blog and all, but for both the USAF and USN the discussion remains unrealistic.
